1846-1851--My last evening in Ireland
I saw an incredible memorial last nigh to the great faminie in Ireland. It was 8 life size, very thin, statues walking along the river. Some were holding small children, some empty sacks and some were empty handed. The look of dispair on their faces, especially at dusk, was truely overwhelming. I sat beside the river for a long time trying to understand and appreciate the hardships that others have endured. The Irish are a hardy lot and I do not think that I really understood that until today.
Between 1846 and 1851 the population in Ireland decreased from 8 million to 4 million. 1 million of those starved to death. Even in todays booming economy as Ireland is enjouýing a population boom---the population is still only 7 million. And for anyone who is unaware of the causes of the faminie, as I was until watching a documentary eariler this year, I encourage you to look it up. It was not all an act of nature.
I do have a picture of Dublin that I want to post but I cannot find a internet cafe that allows it. Tonight I am Kobehagen (Copenhagen) preparing to go to Russia tomorrow.
May the force be with you'
