Rainy Saturday in Berlin
It is a cool and rainy day in Berlin. I decided to say until Monday so I extended my reservation at the Jetpak hostel for a couple of days. It is very nice and is owned by a very interesting family. When the owner found out I was from Georgia he went into a long conversation about Jimmy Carter as president and as a human rights advocate. We talked for a long time. His English was so good I asked him where he was from, half expecting him to say that he was from an English speaking country. Nope. A native Berliner although his Dad is from Sri Lanka and his Mom is Russian. I forgot to ask him if English is spoken in Sri Lanka but I will if I see him again. It is such a small world. So after talking for a while I checked in to my 10 person room.....but he upgraded me for free to a 4 person room which was empty for the night. So a night all to myself. I never realized what a nice treat that can be.
And I slept like a baby.
I have been exploring going to Poland a couple of days early and staying in a small town before meeting Becky in Warsaw. In case I haven#t mentioned it, Becky was a fellow volunteer from Portland via Minnesota. She was in Yaroslavl for 8 weeks and then was spending another 5 in eastern Europe before heading home. She is a special education teacher by day and plays guitar and sings with another lady in and around Portland. She is a terrific person and when we found out we both wanted to go to Warsaw, Krackow and Prague we decided to meet up and do those three cities together.
So anyway I am thinking of going to Torun or some other small town in Poland before we meet in Warsaw on the 16th. But we will see.
Another reminder of how precious everything is. I was shopping for an umbrella in a store a few minutes ago when the guy in front of me in line collasped and went into some siezure. A couple of people went to help him and his wife went hysterical. I hung around trying to help for 10 or 15 minutes, which is hard when you do not speak the langague, and then left when there was nothing else to do. As I was walking away and heard the sounds of the approaching ambulance I was reminded......Carpie Deim...'Seize the day'.
So I am off to explore Berlin on foot in the rain. I decided one day on foot and then tomorrow I will try the public transportation. So far I am very impressed with Berlin. The hostel I am staying at is part of the old "west Berlin".
Until next time..take care.
