Interesting people I have met on my travels
In Malaga Spain I had a 6.30 am train to catch which meant I needed to walk the 5 km to the train station. I left the hostel at 5.00 and begin following the directions given to me by the front desk. After walking about 30 minutes I had a feeling I needed to turn but the directions were to walk straight down this road for 5km. I saw an older gentleman out for his early morning walk and decided to ask him. Of course I did not speak Spanish but after making the sound of a train, and him seeing my 47lb backpack, he understood I was looking for the train station. So he started pointing this way and then holding up three fingers, then go left and go 4 fingers......finally he just ask me to follow him. He then led me ...another 45 minutes....all the way to the Entrance to the station. I told him thank you(Gracia) about 10 times and he smiled from ear to ear. I guess we made each others day...he sure made mine.
Sonja and I stayed in the room with a South Korean guy in Lisbon Portugal with a broken hand. As we were sitting around one night I started asking him the normal questions..how long have you been on the road, where have you been etc, etc. Well it seems him and a friend had left Seoul South Korea in March and had been riding bicycles and camping out on a Seoul to Lisbon journey. All the way across China, Pakistan, Iran, Northern Italy, Southern France, Spain and then Portugal. In late November, just before crossing into Spain from France, he had been the victim of a Hit and Run driver while on his Bike. He had gone to the hospital and then to some friends in Paris while his friend continued. Now a few weeks later he had met him in Lisbon to celebrate the end to their Asia/Europe trip. A very interesting fellow.
